Piano Progress – Spring Semester 2025 This semester marked some exciting strides in my piano journey. For context, I began seriously studying piano during the pandemic using the Suzuki method, reaching the early stages of Book 5. While this gave me a strong foundation in repertoire, I’ve been working to fill gaps in my "traditional" piano training—especially in technique and sight-reading. My focus this past semester was: 1. To work on Bartók’s Mikrokosmos Vol. 3 and record the Vol. 1 a tempo; 2. To play all Suzuki pieces books 1-4 and record it (I’ll try to do that once per year until 2067); 3. Improve sight reading skills and technique. I also discovered   Turi Collura’s  Brazilian Piano —an   absolutely fantastic   book—and focused on  Zequinha de Abreu’s  Tico Tico no Fubá   as my main repertoire piece.  La Casa de los Espiritus de Isabel Allende (1982) Faz alguns anos que eu faço uma lista dos livros que leio. Minha ideia é sempre fazer uma postagem sobre cada livro, mas obviamente nunca faço, hahaha. Eis o primeiro: Li La Casa de Los Espíritos de Isabel Allende em inglês, o que não creio que tenha sido a melhor coisa a se fazer. Qualquer tradução, por melhor que seja, deixa a desejar na natureza da língua escrita ou falada. Pois bem, LINDO. Um dos grandes livros de romance histórico, ou que contam historias de gerações da mesma familia.  Esse livro se passa em meados do século XX, e, por meio da história das mulheres dessa familia especifica, toca nos assuntos de ditaduras e democracias na América Latina (no livro não se especifica o pais, o que da uma impressão interessante de que poderia ser qualquer um dos nossos, latinoamericanos), assim como mostra como as revoluções culturais tiveram impactos individuais em cada pessoa. Introducing Diverse Music-Making in the Classroom with Cultural Respect How do you approach culturally responsive teaching in your classroom? On April 18th, 2025, Ms. Andrea Tijanero—Music Theory TA at the School of Music and one of my favorite people (and friend!)—invited me and other teachers to lead a bonus class on embodied music for her theory students. I’m not sure if the room was packed because the students were genuinely curious or  really  needed that extra credit (okay, probably the latter—haha!), but the energy was incredible. We began with a fantastic warm-up led by our colleague James Williams, who got everyone moving with rhythmic exercises.
